A password-protected directory or area is a folder that could be accessed only if a username and a password are provided, so no unauthorized individuals can see its content. This option may be used for the main folder of a particular Internet site or exclusively for a particular subfolder based on your requirements. As an example, if you are creating a new website and you do not want people to see it before it's completely ready, you have to limit the access to it altogether, whereas if you need only some individuals to be able to access particular files, you are able to password-protect only a certain folder, while the other parts of the site can be seen by anybody. In either case, a “403 Forbidden” error page shall appear when the login details the visitor types in are not correct. Even a direct link to a file shall not work if any folder above it is password-protected.

Password Protected Directories in Web Hosting

Creating a password-protected area shall take no more than several mouse clicks and a few seconds when you host your sites in a web hosting account with our company. You will not have to do anything complex - you'll have to select a domain/subdomain, to pick which folder under it must be protected, and then to type the login name and password that'll be used to access that folder. In case a number of people require their own login details, there shall not be a problem to set up a number of different usernames with access to the same folder. All secured folders will appear with a padlock icon inside the File Manager section, so you will always know where this option is activated. If you would like to deactivate the protection function for any folder, you can disable it from the very same section of the CP where you have enabled it.
